Project Summary
Drawing its own inspiration from the basic concept of the highly ethical bond existing between education and democracy, the project “Steps of Citizenship” exploits one of the most important topos of worldwide culture such as that of the “town/city”, to enhance in students environment awareness, conceived as an essential requisite for the development of social and civic competences, necessary for the exercise of active citizenship.
The project is a multilateral partnership, involving 13 and14 year-old -students from 3 schools:
1. Istituto Comprensivo Camerano (Camerano, Italy), applicant organization;
2. 120 Primary School (Sofia, Bulgaria), partner organization;
3. Sehit Ogretmen Mehmat Ali Durak Ortaokulu (Ankara, Turkey), partner organization.
Moving from the study of different ideal towns in the past, students are gradually led to:
1) focus on their own town;
2) identify the positive and negative features of the town;
3) plan improvements and positive actions.
Through a methodological approach based on cooperative learning, task-based activities and the use of ICT students from all the schools participating in the project will have the chance :
– to widen their cultural horizon by getting to know different towns, both from a geographical and a historical point of view;
– to develop intercultural competences through the contact with students from other countries and through the exchange of outputs and different ideas and values;
– to develop transversal competences through the implementation of activities combining theory, practice and interdisciplinarity (literacy, art, foreign languages, geography, history and technology);
– to develop their linguistic skills in a foreign language;
– to develop digital skills;
– to develop creativity through the planning of activities that require the exercise of critical thinking and sense of initiative;
– to be protagonist of their own learning, playing an active role in the activities planned.
Schools’ trans-national meetings are meant to:
– plan detailed activities and evaluate outputs;
– widen cultural and professional background;
– share innovative and experimental practices;
– exchange information about national school systems, curricula and evaluation.
At the end of the project empowerment of pulils’ personal potential and motivation are expected, together with improvement of their intercultural and interpersonal competences and development of their linguistic and digital skills. Impact is also expected on each institution in terms of cooperation and internationalization, cultural and professional dynamism.
Last but not least, pupils’ families will benefit in terms of developing new attitudes towards other cultures and overcoming eventual prejudices, while the staff will have the chance to enrich their professional background.
