Project Summary
In the City aims to raise the basic knowledge of young (18-35 years old) adults on the use of digital tools and on strategies to extract useful knowledge from Internet/apps available on smartphones and on PC, through the creation, the promotion and the use of a series of edutainment tools focused on the cultural roots of the city in which the target adults live. It will help also establish a common cultural basis among all residents (with strong local roots and newcomers). The whole learning process will be carried out through a sort of game, providing a fresh and engaging approach thought for delivering information to young adult audiences that are currently not at ease in formal education in classes or in similar forums. The edutainment tools will include tutorials and written material on the technology in use and on the way to use it; the non-highly skilled users will also have the chance to get involved in refining the product by uploading content and images enhancing their digital skills. As a further side-effect, the project will help turning mass tourism more sustainable by diverting the tourist flow to neglected areas to the benefit of residents, tourists small businesses whose main clients a e tourists, and this also city managers.
The edutainment suite of products “In the city” will use Augmented Reality and Pokemon Go/QrCode type solutions, to show (app: when reaching a certain place, software: when virtually visiting the place), the site reconstructed as it was and artworks showing that place or related to it; the user will be able to interact with the site and the artworks discovering more information about them and playing with them, being engaged in looking at the tutorials on the technology used to develop the product. The set of products, which could become the first of a wider set of art edutainment tools with different concept, will be produced as standalone software, as app to be launched from existing platforms, as well as integrated section of sites in overall services and information offered. It will be tailor-made according to the type of user (residents and tourists) and level of knowledge in art.
The creation of the products will require the recruitment of staff both for software development and for content preparation and it will be sought after among non-highly skilled individuals, that owing to the daily work side-by-side with the experts will be able to deepen their knowledge and then be able to find more easily job opportunities in the wider labour market.
It will enhance the learning opportunities also indirectly, through the educators that will use In the City products to teach students on various disciplines (IT, humanities, language etc.) having an attractive new teaching tool .
The project and its teaching effort will target mainly the following groups
1) young (18-35 years old) adult residents that have deep roots in the place with poor digital skills due to the lack of past training and insufficient study; they are interested in in getting new insights in their city, discovering how known venues looked like in the past or new venues that are unexpectedly interesting in a city that they believe they know well. They will get this interesting information through a sort of game whose technological structure they will be able to get acquainted with. Besides, the tools will help integrating the city residents: the app/software, a tool very often used by large sections of the adult population, will help overcoming social and psychological barriers, between low and high-end of the social echelon, between residents and newcomers.
2) young (18-35 years old) adult residents less tied to the specific city, that are looking to establish a deeper relationship with the local population sharing their same cultural reference points and know more about the cities in which they live. Through the game, they will informally get the information that they are looking for, but while doing so they will raise their digital and alphabetical competences. Nowadays cities often host a blend of peoples coming from different areas in the world, that mostly have little knowledge on the cultural roots of the places to which they migrated, but which are often interested in knowing better. The learning process, triggered by the use of simple tools like “In the city” will help them to know better technologies widely used, push them to further deepen their knowledge and in the meantime become more familiar with their new city.
We believe that local administration will strongly support the project due to its important learning objectives and the attractive method used to reach them, but also as it will help them to manage better their cities in the age of mass tourism.
All the same, small businesses outside of main city centres will greatly help in spreading the use of the In the City tools, as it will attract more clients to the places in which their business is located.
