Project Summary

The European project “The future we choose” was born bearing in mind that Schools need to find solutions to help very young pupils recognize crisis situations and learn how to overcome them, to understand which are their rights as children and citizens.
The aim of the project is to teach pupils how to act properly in crisis situations such as earthquake, fire, flood, deadly viruses, terrorist acts and climate change. They need to be prepared to deal with unexpected situations. The project will teach them how to use their abilities, how to create new ones, to adapt and find fast solutions to move forward when facing crisis. Pupils will step through brainstorming activities, lessons in which they learn from teachers or other professionals, extracurricular activities and also through the experience given by activities in which real crisis situations are simulated. The content is about past events and how people managed to pass over life threatening situations (the 2nd World War, the communist period, natural disasters, diseases) and also about difficult situations mankind is facing nowadays, about the way towns and countries are organized and which are pupils’ rights. The activities will be developed using new teaching techniques, experiential learning, digital tools. Pupils will work in school and during mobilities, in pairs and in groups.
There are 6 schools involved in the project: School “Principesa Margareta”, from Romania, Agrupamento de Esclas do Fundao, Portugal, Yldiz Gursoy Kiz Anadolu Imam Hatip Lisesi, Turkey, Iisaku Gumnaasium, Estonia, Onze – Lieve – Vrouw – van – Lourdescollege Edegem, Belgium, Gymnasium of J. K. Tyla, Hradec Kralove, the Czech Republic. The project needs to be developed in partnership with other European countries in order to exchange information, ways of dealing with various issues and learn from each other how to face critical situations.
The objectives of the project are:
1. To create the abilities of 50 to 200 students from each partner school to act in crisis situations through the knowledge they have and the activities that should be carried out when facing fire, flood, earthquake, terrorist acts, sudden climate change, life threatening viruses
2. To enable 200 students from each partner school do develop civic engagement that will lead to voluntary activities designed to help those in need
3. To use experiential learning by 5 to 10 teachers from each partner school as a way of pedagogical innovation
4. To create a useful context for using foreign languages in real life and using computers as tools for learning
There are going to be 2 types of results: visible (posters, compositions, magazines, videos) and untouchable ones that will be used by pupils and teachers on longer term: knowledge acquired, skills and competences developed.
All partner schools will do the common assignments and each will have particular responsibilities. The pupils participating in this project are 13-17 years old and the teachers teach various subjects. Parents will be active partners in this project. They will advise from their own lives and perspective.
The final products of the project:
– brochure with the personalities that marked Europe/ mankind in the last 100 years
– brochure with a set of rules to follow in case of crisis situations
– a Code of tolerance that should govern the way they live in their school/ country/ E.U.
– a film with their answers to the following questions: “When you become a grown-up EU citizen what will you keep/ try to change?”
– a site with activities, all materials produced, ways of evaluation and dissemination;
– a booklet with Good Practices in Experiential Learning
By the end of the project pupils will know how to recognize various crisis situations and sets of rules and activities they need to perform, will have improved linguistic, digital, social abilities, an enhanced civic engagement and self-esteem. Teachers will have improved pedagogical, linguistic and digital competences. Each partner school will benefit from the products of the project in terms of didactic material produced, numerous and more different types of extracurricular activities that can be used. Partner schools will have better trained teachers, who master key competences and therefor the pupils will be more motivated to learn. At national level, each partner school will gain prestige and quality due to the implemented project. The project will be disseminated nationally via different professional associations. At the meeting in Belgium, students will present the results of the project to the representatives of the European Council. The teachers and pupils in each partner school will use the results in future activities and take them as first step in new partnerships.
The most important lesson of the would be that the values of mankind can be respected and preserved no matter what situation we are facing as persons or citizens of a certain country or of the world.
