Project Summary
The project called “The city we live in” – the cultural heritage of our hometowns should be part of Erasmus+ and take place in five different countries over a period of 24 months.
The project is intended to reach students of migration backgrounds who build up the majority of the students at their respective schools. If pupils of our school in Vienna are asked, they often answer with their parents’ home country, e.g. Turkey or Serbia although most of them were born and raised in Vienna or some other part of Austria. The aim is to strengthen the students’ sense of their hometowns as well as to give them an insight into their cities’ richness in diversity. Each of the participating cities is famous for both its history and its cultural heritage. The pupils should connect the term “home” with their own place of residence and thus be able to identify themselves with their hometown. Pupils from socially disadvantaged families often do not have the feeling that they belong to the locals because they cannot participate in the cultural life of their place of residence due to lack of money or poor education. We also want to change that with this project.
Moreover, many of our students come from low-income families who are not able to provide their children with journeys or visits of cultural events. Furthermore, the stays in the foreign countries are aimed to develop the students’ foreign language skills. It would be very helpful if the students were able to stay in contact with and support each other if someone wants to do an exchange year or an internship in one of the cities.
Each of the participating schools has decided upon a topic related to the project title that will be worked out by the students during the period of 24 months.
The participants:
1) Bundeshandelsakademie Wien 10, AUT (Wien) Topic: Digitization
2) College George Sand, FR (Chatellerault) Topic: Environment/Nature
3) Istitutod’Istruzione Superiore Majorana, IT (Avola) Topic: Enogastronomy
4) IES Alonso Sánches, ESP (Huelva) Subject: Discovery
5) Springwood High School, UK (King’s Lynn) Theme: Creativity
In the course of the meetings, the main topics will be presented by the pupils of the partner schools and the results and differences will be exchanged. In the months before the project meetings the students in the project group should deal exceedingly with the respective topic during workshops that take place at the schools. New technologies are learned and applied and the language skills of the pupils are also strengthened as the presentations of the workshops should be held in English or another foreign language.
During the workshops the following activities will be carried out by the participants: Creation and production of reports, short films, photo series, presentations and a brochure about the respective location. In addition, logos are to be created of which the two best logos will be selected via a contest and then published.
The main topic of the project remains “The cultural heritage” and the partner schools focus on the following different subtopics:
• Discovery: working out discoveries and inventions that came up at the place of residence or from its inhabitants
• Enogastronomy: Discovery of typical food and drinks from the respective region, culture of wine
• Creativity: Collection and presentation of typical or current local dances and music
• Environment/Nature: discovery of regional plants and trees
• Digitization: working with inovative apps (augmented books, interactiv quizes, picture/film editing
During the meetings the places of the cultural heritages of the partner cities are visited, cooking courses will be held and interactive city tours will be organized. Photo galleries of the respective meetings will be created in order to be shared among all the project members. These will be published on the project homepage which is linked to all websites of the partnerschools.
