Project Summary
The planet is the only provider of life to us. The students of today are very aware of that. We can obviously see that by their protests on schooldays. They are skipping school to let the leaders of the world know that they mean it, that they want measures to be taken NOW! What most students do not realize is that they are also a big factor in the preservation of the planet. They are quite ignorant concerning the reasons of the climate changes and on how they can contribute themselves to change things. If you want to change the world, you start with yourself!
To start off the project we will play the film: ‘Water changes everything’ to show the students that one person can change the world. Children always say that one person cannot do anything to change the world and it won’t help, and this video tells the other side of this story.
The objectives of our project are creating awareness on the Global Goals, inclusion and civic engagement. Use their creativity helps them to understand the underlying theory. Moreover, we do a physical exchange to aim at them developing themselves to be world citizens to enable them in to experience the freedom to move around the world confidently a later stage of life. They will need languages to do that, we want to inspire them to go and learn them. By being inspired themselves, they will surely inspire others.
The number of students involved is 30 Dutch and 30 French pupils. The Dutch pupils are chosen because of their bilingual education involving foreign trips. The French pupils are in one class chosen by their teacher to improve their English and for above objectives.
We have organized multiple activities which are connected to the Global Goals. We use the lessons of the world’s largest lessons as well, but we will change them into practical lesson to make sure that all the participants can cope. We do not want anybody to feel left out.
As mentioned above we will work on Global Goal 13, Climate Action. The pupils will research this item in depth and make a PP or film about it to share with everybody. Around Global Goals we will work with Responsible production/consumption (global goal 12) in which we work around the subject of recycling. We will have them make new object from waste products and we will have them make presents for children in the food bank by using items from a thrift shop and making them into beautiful things. We will also work with global goals 1 and 2 Poverty and No Hunger by giving a practical lesson on inequality/ solidarity . We will have a student present what she experienced in Malawi while doing a project for “Edukans”. A group of French students in an Unicef group at school will also present.
To reach the goal of world citizenship we could mention all the activities that we are doing because all the pupils speak in a foreign language to communicate and will experience life in another country in the physical exchange weeks. Moreover, we are giving them a chance to become friends.
The methodology to be used in carrying out the project is to be pedagogically in the way we present and evaluate the project. We make sure that the assignments we give can be done by every student of every ability to make sure that nobody will feel left out. We want to create more self esteem and we are also reaching this goal by not marking the products and showing their weaknesses but by valuing their process, knowledge and skills they have acquired.
The results will hopefully be that we have created awareness around the Global Goals and given them the chance to take the next step on the ladder to be confident and inspired world citizens. The impact envisaged will be that they stay inspired and inspire others to do the same. The potential longer term benefits would be that they have created a better world for themselves and the next generation.
