Project Summary
“A Breath, Thousand Emotions” is a Strategic Partnership project aims to introduce traditional musical instruments of partner countries to young people, and by this way, focuses on expanding awareness of young people on cultural heritage and cultural transmission. European culture reveals that almost every country has a traditional musical instrument that reflects its own culture. However, it is observed that young people do not know the history, structure and characteristics of traditional musical instruments and also do not use them widely. For this reason, we have been attentive to select experienced and enthusiastic partners from European countries in order to introduce traditional musical instruments to young people, to describe their culture by means of musical instruments and to provide young people with new basic skills or to develop a meaningful leisure activity. From this point of view, the main objectives of the Project are to revive the interest in traditional musical instruments, to ensure the use of these instruments as means of cultural transmission, and also to derive social benefit by providing young people with new basic skills and so increasing employment opportunities. On the other hand, the priorities of this project in terms of cultural heritage can be specified as follows: *Introducing traditional musical instruments of partners to young people, and getting them informed about different cultures, *Ensuring the use of these musical instruments as means of cultural transmission, *Contributing to the conserving process of the World Cultural Heritage, *Increasing toleration towards cultural differences and contributing to the socio-cultural development, *Generating sustainable intercultural cooperation. In this context, Ebru (Turkish Art of Marbling) and Ney making (within the Mevlevi Sema Ceremony), which are the two traditional Turkish arts included in the UNESCO Representative
List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity , are combined with an innovative approach by performing Ebru on Ney for the first time, and the patent application of this new performance has been accepted. It is aimed by the Project to teach this practice to young people. In this way, a significant contribution will be made to the intangible cultural heritage of humanity. Furthermore, it is planned to turn this new practice into a Digital Training Module. Thereby, while contributing to the representation, conserving and sustaining of intangible cultural heritage, this innovative practice will also be used as a means of creating a new profession, increasing employment opportunities and providing a new source of income for the national economies. The Project will also contribute to sustainable intercultural communication and cooperation and to the process of expanding awareness of young people on cultural heritage. Within the scope of the Project, the project coordinator institution Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa and the local partner Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey University from the coordinator country Turkey will demonstrate the making of Turkish traditional musical instrument “Ney” to 7 young people in the 18-30 age group from each partner country through a 7-day
workshop, and also train them for developing a new product by performing Ebru on Ney. The total number of participants will be 42 young people. Similarly, partner countries Italy, Romania, Lithuania and Portugal are expected to inform these young participants by introducing their own traditional musical instruments. From this point of view, Italy’s traditional musical instrument “Tamburello”, Romania’s traditional musical instrument “Nai”, Lithuania’s traditional musical instrument “Kankles”, and Portugal’s traditional musical instrument “Cavaquinho” have been designated within the scope of the Project. All of these promotional activities are planned to take place on the Project website. Besides, each partner country will turn the introductory information about their traditional musical instruments into a guide. Afterwards, the introductory guides prepared by partner countries will be merged into one by the coordinator country Turkey under the title of Traditional Musical Instruments Digital Training Book. Consequently, the expected results during the Project and on its completion are as follows:
• Generating sustainable intercultural cooperation and communication,
• Increasing toleration towards cultural differences,
• Creating awareness on cultural heritage, developing a protective tendency towards cultural heritage among young people and passing this tendency down to next generations,
• Ensuring the participation of young people in intercultural communication by means of traditional musical instruments,
• Creating a new profession and increasing employment opportunities,
• Contributing to the socialization of disadvantageous participants,
• Turning the practice of performing Ebru on Ney into a digital training module, and so, generating sustainability.
