Project Summary
The project “The S.T.E.A.M. instructional approach – A meaningful education” (S.T.E.A.M = Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics) refers to the design and implementation of an instructional approach in which all the above subjects are developed in a learning environment characterized by interaction, interdisciplinarity and active participation of students. The purpose of the project is the development of participating students’ cognitive skills and the awakening of their interest in the educational process through their involvement in activities that are close to their everyday life and to contemporary technological developments in a collaborative framework.
The project involves five schools, the Experimental High School of Mytilene of the Aegean University as Coordinating school, the Istituto Tecnico Industriale Statale Alessandro Volta, the Istituto D’istruzione Superiore “Patini-Liberatore”, the Colegiul Tehnic Edmond Nicolau Focsani and the Adile Mermerci Anadolu Lisesi. The project is implemented by 20 teachers and 60 students.
The participating schools have chosen to develop two primary topics and two secondary topics included in the S.T.E.A.M. thematology. During the two-year project, each school assumes the role of the trainer for the other schools as to the primary topics and the role of the learner as to the secondary topics. Thirty proposals/teaching scenarios are created and are implemented, evaluated and shared between schools. Participating schools also develop applications, constructs, presentations within these topics, which they exhibit during the scheduled meetings. A printed edition that includes the proposals/teaching scenarios is created. All material is uploaded to the electronic media that support the project. The dissemination and promotion of the project will contribute to the development of cognitive and social skills of all participants and the will constitute the implementation material for an innovative practice of free access to any educational institution concerned.
