Project Summary
The acronym SpLD (“Specific Learning Disabilities”) identifies all those Specific Learning Disorders concerning dyslexia, dysgraphia, dysorthography and dyscalculia. These types of disorders have been the subject of in-depth studies for a relatively short time, as they manifest themselves, unlike canonical “disabilities”, only in certain aspects of an individual’s life.
The objective of TIDE was to provide a new method of accompaniment for students with SpLD in order to reduce the number of people who give up continuing their education due to this disorder.
Parnership:
1. UNIVERSITA DEGLI STUDI DI MODENA E REGGIO EMILIA (lead applicant)
2. ForModena soc. cons. a r. l. – Formazione professionale per i territori modenesi soc.cons. a r.l.
3. Europa Büro, Stadtschulrat für Wien
4. Goldsmiths, University of London
5. ETHNIKO KAI KAPODISTRIAKO PANEPISTIMIO ATHINON
The partnership has allowed the specific experiences developed by each partner to bear fruit, attributing to each of them a well-defined responsibility on the IOs and on the actions related to them in order to guarantee everyone to exploit their own particular experience and to bring specific expertise, implementing a virtual exchange and sharing circuit. The universities involved for some time have been working together on projects to reduce the gap between subjects with SpLDs and non-disabled people, with a particular focus on school education. The experts involved are professors among the top European SpLD scholars, and technicians who work specifically in the field of reception and support of dyslexic students within the universities of their competence. BSfW is the public body responsible for the education of students aged 6 to 19 (about 211,000) attending Vienna schools. Having BSfW skills in supporting educational programs, it has had the task of reducing as much as possible the learning gap between able-bodied students and students with learning problems. ForModena has opened its higher level training activities also to people with SpLD, becoming one of the “pilot” bodies in undertaking an experience that is almost unknown at national level.
TIDE products:
1. Realization of a research that covered the following fields:
Overview of European legislation on SPLDs
mapping of the structures and methods used to make the study accessible to students with SPLD
Achievement and analysis of special educational needs.
Collection of good practices applied in the countries involved in the project
Conclusions to identify a tool applicable to all levels of education after compulsory education.
In summary, the activities carried out by IO2 are as follows:
Identification of the accompanying tool (online training module for high school teachers and university students);
determination of the online program structure (duration, registration methods, etc.)
identification of the contents of the training activities to be included in the program,
Insertion of the online course on the Eduopen platform (in English with several lessons in Greek, Italian and German)
Experimentation of the course by technicians and researchers

Cours Program
1. SpLD: definition and contexts
2. SpLD in different countries
3. Current tools and strategies for SpLD
4. Teachers training and strategies to use assistive technology
5. Experiences of SpLD students regarding their education history
6. Documents and materials
During IO 3 the project guidelines were developed. This is a publication in English and Italian that contains:
The research (see IO1)
The contents of the online course (see IO2)
The project’s conclusions containing suggestions and indications regarding how to deal more efficiently:
the accompaniment of students with SPLD
Impact of TIDE
Establishment and / or strengthening of relations with the territory by all partners
Introduction of refresher courses for teachers in Austria, where dyslexia still does not have a specific reference law
High number of students attending the online course
Involvement of the University of Granada with its impact on the Andalusian territory.
Long-term benefits can be identified in the sustainability of the online course. The course, managed by Eduopen (www.eduopen.org), one of the largest European online training platforms, guarantees the permanence of activities in the coming years, ensuring technical maintenance and scientific updating.
