Project Summary

The basic anthropological principles of Waldorf education look at adolescence as a period of self-discovery. In addition to the comprehensive physiological restructuring processes, thinking, feeling and willing receive a personal and often highly subjective character. The adolescents are at critical distance from their social environment. Internally, they experience – more or less consciously – their own ideals and values, to which external reality, with its acute social problems, is sharply contrasted. Faced with this contrast, fears and doubts can push adolescents to avoidance strategies. Depending on individual predisposition, internal emigration (“flight from the world”) or an opportunistic adaptation to external reality abandoning one’s own values and ideals (“world-addiction”) may result. The development task for the adolescents of this period consists in acquiring the skills (competences), actively contributing to the social contexts based on their own intentions, values and ideals.
With the current project, the partner schools want to further develop their pedagogical concepts in such a way that they are increasingly geared to the teaching of appropriate competences and to encourage and enable the adolescents to get actively and solution-oriented involved in social development processes. For this purpose, lesson modules are to be developed and tested, which thematically have a high contemporary relevance and methodically demand and promote a large measure of student initiative and individual activity. The theme chosen is “Sustainable Future: I see – I feel – I act”. Students in grades 8-13 are encouraged to take a hands-on look at the challenges of economic, environmental and social sustainability through specific examples. They prepare international workshops in which they work together with students of the partner schools on the chosen topics. The workshops involve cooperation with local actors (businesses, non-governmental organizations, government institutions) committed to the challenges of sustainable development and can refer to examples of successful sustainability.

Due to the pandemic, 2 of the 3 planned teacher workshops had to be cancelled. However, the basic objectives of the project did not change during the project period.
Results:
1. Teacher awareness and competences
In all partner schools involved, the teachers’ understanding of sustainable development has clearly increased.
2. The changed understanding of teaching is also reflected in the further development of the school concept and curricula of the participating schools.
(Reorientation of the curricula in various subjects).
3. New methodical forms of teaching were introduced within the framework of the project.
(learning diary, LernperLe, sustainable student companies)
4. Cooperation with extracurricular partners
Within the framework of the project, contacts with extracurricular partners were established or deepened.
Some of these contacts will continue beyond the duration of the project as permanent cooperation.
