Project Summary

The participants of the project Tunnel of Time are Finland, France, Spain and Turkey.

There are two main themes in the project: 1) the equality between men and women and how it has changed during the last decades and 2) the skills needed at work nowadays and in the future and how the working life has changed during the last decades. To get information and ideas about the gender equality the students interview their relatives, fellow students, residents of the local nursing home for elderly and children in the kindergarten (pre-school). The cooperation with the children happens mostly by story telling and letting them create new illustrated stories which the students analyze paying attention to the equality. The information about the skills needed at work is got from the interviews of the relatives, old people in the nursing home and representatives of the local companies.

In each meeting there are 2 teachers and 3 students from each partner country. The role of the students is important in every meeting as they build the exhibition with the teachers. They give a presentation about their schools and hometowns in the welcoming party. They are also required to observe the lessons and participate in the evaluation process with the teachers. The purpose of their travelling is to learn about different cultures and analyze the results of the research done together with partner students. They visit the local kindergarten and the nursing home for elderly, perform there and show them the filmed regards of the kindergarden and the nursing home of their own country. They then make presentations of these visits to the partner countries and show the presentations in their school, nursing home and kindergarten.

There is a special theme in each meeting and it is presented by an exhibition (posters with photos and text).
The themes of the meetings are 1) “One day in my life” consisting of photos taken by people of different age groups during the same day in each country and “The favourite stories” based on children’s opinions and illustrated by them, 2) “Modern stories made by children” with their drawings and “Equality and role models in different decades” based on the interviews of people of different ages, 3) “Favourite/important jobs of the past, the present and the future” and “The skills needed at work” based on the interviews of relatives, old people in nursing homes and representatives of local companies and 4) “Tunnel of Time in Europe” consisting of all the material filmed during the project and “Our way of life” representing each school’s customs and culture during a school year.

The end product will be a booklet consisting of all the interviews, stories, pictures and photos. It will be published in English and in the native language of each partner. The other end product will be the film “Tunnel of Time in Europe” consisting of all the filmed material.

The students learn social skills by working with people of different ages and nationalities. They also learn to perform in front of a wide audience. The teachers can create a network of colleagues with whom they can continue working on Twinspace etc. Both teachers and students can improve their language skills and ICT skills. One of our aims is to develop practises which improve the equality between the sexes at our schools. Furthermore, we aim to modify the teaching methods and the contents of the lessons in order to improve the skills that the students will need in working life.

After the project we continue the visits to the nursing home for elderly people and the kindergarten. Our students can visit there, for example, as a part of their health education/social study lessons. If they work actively as volunteers they can get a report which may help them to get a summer job. This co-operation with the nursing home and the kindergarten connects the school and the society around it.
