Project Summary
TURN is a transnational filmmaking project between creative, young filmmakers in Northern Iceland and Finland.
It is conducted by the young North Icelandic media production company NyArk Media and the Finnish youth audiovisual organization Euphoria Borealis with the objective was to create a high profile, globally exposed short film that has important references in Icelandic folklore, serving as one of few horror thrillers in Icelandic film and has an environmental underlying theme. We have now succeeded in making the film and are extremely happy with the result and the cooperation between the organizations.
Special webpage under NyArk Media is dedicated to Umskipti short film and basic information on the film found there: http://www.nyarkmedia.com/artists/#/turn/
We have introduced the project via social media on our Instagram and Snapchat as well our own facebook page for the project:
https://www.facebook.com/turnfilm/
The project has thus served as a crucial learning experience for the young participants from Iceland and Finland, and inspired young people around and in the organizations.
In the project young adults were given the opportunity to work on their filmmaking skills and honing their talent, which they might otherwise find difficult since it is always hard to get funding for a starting projects when experience is still limited. We believe that the co-operation between the countries has been beneficial to both partners as each company brought different people with different set of skills to the table who learned from each other. We also hope and believe that this partnership will lead to a continuing collaboration on a larger project in the future, also as the formation of a similar organization in Northern Iceland is starting to develop, which will make for perfect future collaborations and exchanges for the two organizations.
The film was shot in Northern Iceland in the autumn of 2017. The first part of that year went into preparation in the creative, financial and operational fields as well as strategize exposure of the project and the content produced for promotion. The film was edited in December 2017 and went into color grade, music and sound design in Finland in the spring months of 2018. It was also promoted at a film festival in Austria at the time when it was not fully ready. It was finished and distributed to film festivals in the summer of 2018.
The learning opportunities in the project for European youth lie in the fact that the process will be photographed and updates and photos will be made public on our facebook page, participants in the group get exposure as well as the website platform will serve as a promotion for the project and learning platform for other young filmmakers in Europe. The marketing strategies have been aimed towards this group as well as film festivals to ensure the most exposure for the film and the platform.
Not only do we have a short film based on Icelandic folklore within a very popular genre for young people, psychological thriller/horror made with European cooperation in two edged countries in Europe, but also a terrific fruit and example of transnational projects like this. The website and interviews blog posts and photographs will then serve as a learning material – with the possibilities to reevaluate and improve future transnational projects.
Euphoria Borealis is already a great platform for youth in filmmaking in Finland and will make it easier to distribute knowledge from the project among the already established group of young filmmakers there under the umbrella of Euphoria Borealis, our partners within the organization were amazing but they were Emilia Haukka co producer, Mari Sainio music composer, Kerttu Jaatinen color grader, Lari Rissanen sound designer and Peter Callow DOP and editor.
For future reference are we also planning a European co operation in the future between the Finnish Euphoria Borealis and a similar organization in Iceland that is yet to be established, but the groundwork is starting to take place. Which means that the film and the facebook page and website, along with social media exposure to promote the website is gonna be a great potential starting point for further youth exchange through a similar organization in Iceland and Euphoria Borealis in the future.
Transnational meetings of the project have served an important purpose of giving the participants a chance to meet and establish further professional relationship in the field of filmmaking, as well as getting to know each others environment and experience the field in another country. These meetings have made cooperation in two countries go more smooth and allow all participants to be more interactive and motivated in the process of developing the project. We believe that we reached that goal and made contacts that will last for a lifetime in the filmmaking industry.
