Project Summary
The project “United in diversity – more than just the slogan of the EU” focuses on the motto of the European Union and aims to make it tangible for the pupils of the participating schools. The common, European togetherness, the esteem that should be shown for each other and the realization that one can be culturally very different, but humanly very close, form the central concern of our project idea. Especially in the 21st century, which is characterized by globalization, migration, and at the same time by constantly emerging radical and racist currents, such an intercultural approach seems to be of particular relevance in order to maintain the values for which our common Europe stands and to fill them with life for the students.
Therefore, the focus is on the cultural diversity of one’s own region, the cultural overlaps and the appreciation of one’s own culture, of the other culture (Spanish or German) and of all cultures represented in the region. In addition, interdisciplinary work is carried out both in the classroom and in the working group to examine the different cultures from different perspectives (including history, socio-economic aspects, religion, language, music and art) in order to achieve the greatest possible participation within the school community (on the part of both students and teachers) and to combine the different aspects with the help of modern media.
The aim is to promote multiculturalism on two levels: On the one hand, practical European cultural guides are to be created, which will be available to the public virtually and offer insights into the cultures examined in the course of the project. In the long term, these will be accessible on the websites of both schools, so that future generations and all interested parties can also benefit from the product of the project. On the other hand, it should be anchored in the minds of the pupils that differences are valuable and only make togetherness more important. They should experience at first hand what it means to exchange with each other, to learn from and about each other and to create something together. The label “School without racism” will be carried from Mettmann to Barcelona and the intercultural competence and ability to act will be extended, consolidated and strengthened in the long term. We are looking forward to the cooperation!
