Project Summary
The main focus of this project was to internalize the European values we share to promote a peaceful and friendly coexistence of different cultures. The project covered a three year period.
Conflicts even arose in Europe, for example the conflict between Russia and the Ukraine, which has made this project a worthwhile cause. Therefore it is generally most desirable to remind the European community of our common values and to internalize them.
These common values are the cornerstones of an economic cooperation. Exemplarily, the large group of foreign workers should be named who came and still come to our countries and are well-assimilated, building an enrichment for our societies. Each European citizen should be able to trust in his/her European neighbours and the values agreed on among the member states of the European Union. So, mobility might become easier and economic efficiency increases.
The students having participated in this project came from Augustin-Wibbelt-Gymnasium (AWG) in Warendorf and from La Minilla High School in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Augustin-Wibbelt-Gymnasium as being an “Aufbaugymnasium” offers those students who need extra time for their personal development and were not recommended to study at a “Gymnasium”, the opportunity to achieve degrees which allow them to go to university.
Many students were from families having a migration background and coming from economically underprivileged families. The students from La Minilla High School live on the Canary Islands, which are located hundreds of miles away from the countries which are member states of the European Union. This fact makes it difficult to develop the feeling of European citizenship. The students from La Minilla High School have various nationalities and have different social backgrounds.
Both high schools offer handicapped students the possibility to attend school.
Besides the project had, in accordance to the European framework “Education & Training 2020” the following aims: “Promoting justice, social cohesion and active citizenship”. Also, this project wanted to take into account the strategy paper ”Europe 2020” here concentrating on the headline target of “Poverty” – “The reduction of poverty and social exclusion”.
Due to the fact that the internalization of values is not just a theoretical concept, numerous activities and exchanges took place.
In the exchange program 15 students aged 15 to 17 and three teachers had participated. During these exchanges we wanted to carry out the following activities:
• Designing a logo for the project; the project “Daily Painting”; giving presentations to cultural aspects and activities using songs; composing of melodies.
• Program of the first student exchange: having created works of art such as making sculptures, having taken photos and having written songs related to common values.
• Having defined values which are to be respected in sports.
• Program of the second student exchange: sports activities, trainings to encourage self-confidence and having contributed ideas for games.
In subjects like Maths, Computer Science, Science and Technology and in classes on politics, students dealt with current topics, as for example climate change. By using pictures and language it was discussed how common European values should be defended.
• Program of the third student exchange:
A fictional story was rewritten and set into current times to be performed on stage. A short film was directed using topics studied and discussed previously.
•Program of the fourth student exchange: questionnaires / interviews covering current European issues.
All the activities (paintings, composing melodies, sports and games, plays, stories…) have been published on the web pages of both high schools, they were published in some newspapers, on the radio, on Youtube, Facebook and e-Twinning. All activities and works were stored in a “Museumskoffer” (a toolbox in form of a compilation of methodical and educational materials which can be taken from one place to another).
In order to guarantee the quality and development of the project different study groups were built: finances, e-Twinning, a team checking the time frame, preparation of topics, exchanges, public relations, evaluation,“Museumskoffer.” In each group someone was responsible for handling possible delays and difficulties which occured.
This project was meant to have a great impact on the educational communities of both schools, on the people who live in the surrounding areas and among European citizens. It was expected that people would be able to recognize similarities in their ways of thinking and feeling and in their attitude towards others, European values should be strengthened, and an outlook for common future perspectives was to be created.
