Project Summary
“Walking to a more sustainable attitude “has been a project where students and teachers in infant and primary from Spain, Poland, Romania and Lithuania worked together. It was necessary the families and local governments´ participation. The main aim was the necessity to improve our attitudes so that they are more sensible with environment and get a more sustainable planet. The participating schools were very diverse: big and with special needs (Poland), small and inclusive of ethnic minority (Romania), small and rural (Spain) or only with Pre-school education (Lithuania).
With this project we undertook to improve the use of 3R ( reduce, reuse and recycle ) , to take some measures to reduce water, paper and plastic consumption and to take into account geographical proximity and chemical composition of daily products we consume, both at schools and at home. The comparative study during 2 years in the familiar area, in the class group and between countries was useful to know differences between consumption habits and learn from good practices. To do it we distributed students in 4 different work blocks.
– Block 1 (students from 3 to 6). They left schools to pick up waste in the surrounding area, classify them properly and use them to create didactic material for maths, musical instruments, pots to plant, containers for storing, costumes…. Recycling in class rooms and throughout schools was also applied more effectively.
– Block 2 (students from 6 to 8).They compiled during 1 year paper used in class, they weighed and represented data in graphs and took measures to reduce consumption. They visited old paper mills and did hand-made paper. Then they exchanged letters and Christmas cards with it. The second year they compiled plastic containers and studied plastic types, their regular use and advantages and disadvantages of its improper use. They also made a comparative study about plastic consumption in class. Finally they took measures to reduce plastic in school and compiled some families´ commitments to reduce plastic at home.
– Block 3 (students from 8 to 10). They checked different agreed food and cleaning products habitually used, they studied their origin, packaging and composition and they deduced their ecological footprint. They exchanged local recipes made with the worked local products. In the end they made a promotional video about positive and negative aspects of consumption.
– Block 4 (from 10 to 12). Students collected familiar water bills during 2 years and made graphs and consumer studies in the familiar area, in class group and between countries. They knew simple actions to reduce water and applied them both at school and at home. They also carried out a study about the origin of water they consume and visited the respective water plants. Thanks to mobility, students in this block could do a field study where inhabitants from Krakow, Buzescu and Vallbona d´Anoia were surveyed about their consumption habits and their satisfaction level with sustainability in their counties. Results were presented at the local governments and some improvement measures were taken in the schools and counties.
Thanks to this project paper and plastic consumption was reduced both at schools and at home and the number of families that recycle and have reduced their water consumption has increased. Some measures to reuse, recycle and reduce paper and plastic and consume local products in festivals have been included in our educational projects. Results in students and teachers´ competences (especially in English and New Technologies) have also improved , as well as our schools ´prestige at the local and regional levels.
