Project Summary

The idea for the project “What goes around comes around” – intercultural exchange at the Gesamtschule Uerdingen by presenting culture- was born with the arrival of the first refugees at our school. We thought about concepts to integrate these children besides teaching German and being part of a class. In addition this project will also encourage the participation of students with special needs to show the variety of diversity and better the understanding of the need for inclusion. For this Erasmus-Project we decided to work in cultural projects for both of the participating schools have theatre workshops and so there is an easy access to start the cooperation in small groups and enlarge the project step by step through visiting each other, perfoming together and create a final show together. In addition music as a part of it works the same way. So all kind of people will be working to bring one big final show on stage. By doing this they have to trust each other and build up an understanding for each others culture, background, strength, weaknesses, hopes, fears and needs and so they will become more familiar. Theatre and music as subjects are also a good possibility to equalize special needs. Beeing part of a big project also gives us the hope to motivate students of our schools to better their work or at least coming to school more often. Living in host-familys during our visits will give all of us students and teachers a better understanding for each others daily routine, culture, living and working. Both of the schools will send 20 students to work in this project, all between 12 and 15 years old, some with special needs, some living in migration and some of them are so called ordinary kids of their age. The 5 Greek an 4 German teachers supporting this project bring in the skills that are needed to make it a success. Language teachers for documentation and communication, history- and sociology teachers to work on the culutural background. Two of the Greek teachers are very skilled in ICT, so there will be no problem with the digital support during the whole project. One of the German teachers is working with children in migration right from their arrival, so she knows really a lot about the problems and needs of this group of students. Three of the teachers are involved in the theatre workshops at their schools and five of the participating teachers have a lot of experience with project management. All of the Greek partners took part in at least one KA2 project, two of them in more European programs, five teacher of the German school took part in a KA1 program. Besides the participating teachers of both of the schools there will be a wider participation of the teachers of the schools during the progress of the project, f.e. the leader of our choire. In summer 2019 we will build up our Erasmus group for all participating students, starting with their knowledge about beeing a stranger, feeling strange, unwanted and not beeing part of something and also about their selfconfidence, state of mind in intercultural exchange and teamwork. We hope that all of us will benefit from the project and time working on it, to increase self-esteem, selfconfidence, understanding and personality. How we did will be evaluated at the end of the project. Next to forming the European spirit there will be our products like newspaper and hompage articles, an e-twinning platform and of course the big final show, that will stay on after the project is done.
