Project Summary
Today it is normal for the younger generation to travel within Europe without having to show identity cards at the borders. Was that always like that? The goal of the project is to raise awareness that this has not always been the case. The students should deal here with what happened at the borders between the European states in the past, and what devastating consequences (expulsion, killing, discrimination) the disregard of these common, European and humanitarian fundamental values had.
It also aims to raise awareness that there are also similarities today between history and present. In all three participating countries (Germany, Italy and Poland) there are new political parties whose aim is not to accept refugees or repatriate them.
According to the historical and contemporary reflection, students should realize the importance of common values and rights, as well as freedom and peace, in a Europe without borders, and the resulting significant personal and economic benefits. On the other side, it should become clear what risks can arise from turning the back on the European Union, and that we shouldn’t take a free Europe for granted today.
Other goals include raising intercultural competences, promoting critical thinking and strengthening written and oral English language and media skills.
There will be a total of about 180 students from several school types (Berufsfachschule, Fachoberschule, high school and retail classes) and with a different school degree (from intermediate school certificate to high school certificate). The age of the students will be between 16 and 20 years. A total of 20 teachers will support the project.
Mobilities: 1. Como in Sept. 2018: Twinspace workshop on benefits and opportunities. The participants will work together to develop the structure of their own Twinspace. Also planned is the meeting with the Associazione Nazionale Venezia Giulia e Dalmazia, which will report on the Foibe massacre and expulsions on the border between Italy and ex-Yugoslavia after World War II.
2. In Frankfurt in December 2018: Presentation of the interim results of the research on historical events in English. In the workshop, students in mixed groups (D + I + PL) create logos that represent the Erasmus+ project. Visit of the Historical Museum in Frankfurt and participation in the workshop Frankfurt – city of immigrants.
3. In Wroclaw in May 2019: Results of the research on historical events will be presented in plenary in English. Workshops are organized in mixed groups. Each group (D + I + PL) should translate the presentations into the 3rd and 4th languages. Meeting with the German Social-Cultural Society in Breslau, which represents the German minority living in Wroclaw and the surrounding area.
4. In Como and Trieste, Oct. 2019: Participants create an electronic Talking Map. The information will be in four languages: English, German, Polish and Italian. In Como, the Talking Map will be supplemented in workshops with the information gained, which was presented and translated in Wroclaw. In Trieste we meet the organization that deals with the massacre of the Foibe. This organization will organize guided tours in English for all participants in Trieste and in Basovizza.
5. In Frankfurt and in Strasbourg in May 2020: From October to May, the students will be working on parallels between the past and the current wave of refugees. They will try to empathize with the situation of refugees. Work out and appreciate benefits of peace, freedom and democracy in Europe. These parallels will be analysed in Frankfurt as workshops in mixed groups (D + I + PL) and the benefits of life in the EU will be worked out. In Frankfurt there is also a workshop for the creation or supplement of the eBook. We also want a meeting with the civic movement “Pulse of Europe”. In Strasbourg, we will organize a visit to the European Parliament and ideally present our e-book on the project on site.
In addition, at least ten online meetings on the Twinspace and video conferences are planned and a city rally will be held for each city visited.
In our schools we have an online collection of teaching materials. We will upload the developed worksheets here and make them available to all teachers.
The interactive map and the eBook will be uploaded on our homepages. As the topic is cross-curricular, several teachers are likely to be interested in the worksheets.
In the following years, the Talking Map and the eBook can be complemented by other eTwinning projects.
