Project Summary
‘Knowing me, Knowing you’
This project is centred around the development of young people and the way that teachers can enable them to be actively involved in their learning, developing greater self- awareness and understanding of others from different situations.
The schools involved, three of which have worked together before plus a new partner, are aware that the mental health and confidence of young people in Europe is an area that we have to proactively develop in order for them to grow into able citizens. The project built upon a previous project ‘Communication, cooperation and collaboration for all’, where whilst we built on communication between participants, especially pupils we felt that we needed to do more to encouraging a knowledge of each other.
Our title ‘Knowing me, Knowing you’ came about through the following thinking; that by knowing yourself, having good self-esteem / state of mental health and well-being ie liking yourself, you are more able to look towards others and learn, embracing the differences and similarities. This sustainable inclusive growth of young people can work towards their life-long learning and future employability.
Children actively involved and sharing responsibility for their learning develop improved emotional intelligence and well- being which promotes the engagement that they need to function in the 21st century.
The project improved self- knowledge through mindfulness, playing together and problem solving and these elements, along with sharing moodboards were part of each meeting. Understanding of self and others was promoted through various workshops across the Teaching and Learning mobilities. These were art and craft in the form of book binding and water colour painting, flamenco dancing and singing, yoga, sport and healthy living. Our final meeting became virtual due to Covid-19 but led to greatly enhanced work on Sustainability building on pledges made before the pandemic. Greater knowledge of others also came through a sharing of information about the schools and their localities putting the lives of pupils and teachers from each country into a context. Schools and their pupils added to these throughout the project and were able to include architecture, music and culture, sports and healthy exercise and local history and sustainability.
Teachers observed and took part in these workshops building a resource of pedagogic experiences to use in the future, it created a very open-minded growth scenario. The inclusion of QR codes as a resource meant the following of trails about historical monuments, finding out about music and dance, an activity trail around a town and linking to a video of sustainability pledges. This gave example to the many ways this new teaching resource could be used.
Within school between mobilities pupils of all ages in this primary aged project were involved in inclusive activities of creating a joint calendar, designing a logo, recording dances and music to share, completing a physical activity and healthy life style questionnaire, creating and trying healthy snacks, developing sustainability pledges and creating videos about sustainability.
As a response to Covid-19 reflections, comments, presentations and illustrations were gathered from across the schools for a book, with a copy for each school.
Work can be seen on the e-Twinning TwinSpace ‘Knowing me, knowing you’ and on the results platform.
