Project Summary
The project “Talking Bubbles – International Comics Competition” emphasizes the advantage of innovation through creative comics storytelling for the youth to become active citizens. Foundation of the project stands on the know-how gathered during the five years of experience from the continually evaluated national comics competitions held in Czechia.
The main idea is to use “the simple art of comic storytelling” as an innovative tool to transmit complicated global development-related topics. These topics – which are intricately linked to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – will feature in comic competitions, allowing participants to bring in their own views on any of the global issues they are concerned with.
The main profile of the participants consists of non-formal groups of the age group of 14 to 20 years old youth sharing innovative ideas through art. It includes at least 200 youth from four countries (Czechia, Poland, Slovenia, and Portugal).
Activities of the project are split into four phases. The first two phases are carried out during the first year of the project mainly on the national level. This consists of an existing climate change exhibition (from the Czechia) distribution, then the series of online workshops for the youth workers and finally the national winners’ ceremonial and vernissage. In the last two phases, during the second year of the project, the international follow up will be organised. The main activity is a gathering of five youth representatives from each country to join an International summer art camp of 20 youth. The output of the camp will be an International SDGs exhibition in English and an open e-learning course for the youth workers about how to work with comics stories and SDGs.
The methodology is based on the previously existing national competition that has been upgraded through the scaling up to the international European level. This is supported by the expertise of the all partner organisations (and countries respectively) by Climate change (Czechia), Migration politics (Slovenia), Inequality issues (Portugal), and Art expertise (Poland).
The project impacts the youth to become active and motivated in expressing their opinions on global issues via comics, confident that the world is interested in their opinion, support intercultural dialogue with peers, enhancement of the communication skills, to become active citizens and influencers in their environment with an interest in the complexity of the global issues.
