Project Summary

The project “The migrant crisis in an educational perspective” was realized by 4 partnership countries and it concerned the theme of the modern crisis of migration – the situation of refugees in Europe – on the educational level. The project dealt with checking out how partnership countries were teaching modern history and convey information concerning the situation of refugees in Europe and EU politics to pupils.

The project helped to introduce these issues on lessons, it taught the critical thinking and shapes conscious and responsible citizen.

A priority of our project was the promotion of an active nationality of our pupils in Europe, however with the preservation of the national identity, being with the Europe basis. We taught this during History, English (an access to on-line materials, information from different European countries and Red Cross), literature (formation of sensibility and a contact with culture) and civics.

The purposes of our project were:
1. The international cooperation whose a superior value was the participation of countries, having different experiences with the problem of the refugeeism: from Greece and Italy, striving with the problem of refugees to Bulgaria and Poland, which were closing its borders until now.

2. Observing the forms of teaching modern history/ civics in different types of partnership schools and finding the answer to a question: how do we teach our pupils of what happens around us? How we explain them modern Europe and its problems? What kind of tools do we have to do this? How to use the immensity of the information, available on the Internet, in the effective and sense way?

3. The preparation of materials and tools in order to help teachers in the introduction of the theme of migrants in the country and Europe to the syllabus of History, English, literature (the mother tongue) and civics, with the use of digital techniques and teaching methods of the critical thinking (SQ5R method) for the purpose of getting the objective information.

The needs which the project answered, were connected to the changing political and economic situation in Europe: some partnership countries have been already tackled with the problem of the refugeeism (Greece, Italy), so they have to explain and sensibilize their pupils to the problems in the moment of writing the project, when other countries were still far away from the refugee problem (Bulgaria and Poland).

The project was addressed to pupils on all educational levels, in the age from 8 to 18. From the actions which were organized within the framework of the realization of the project, following persons have taken the advantages: pupils from partnership schools, teaching staff, local community, teachers in Europe and in the world, seeking materials on the Internet.

The actions, undertaken in the project, were the organization of international project meetings, training of the pedagogic cadre, creation of authentic and educational materials for the needs of partnership organizations to use them after the end of the project by pupils and teachers and the promotion of the project, its products and results, together with the promotion of the programme Erasmus Plus in the local environment.

The results of the projects were:
– preparing the website of the project with authentic materials, results, photos and descriptions of the project activities,
– organising a conference about the MCEP project and Erasmus programme for local community of Zabrze,
– making two booklets: with lesson scenarios and pupils’ reflections.

The methodology which was used in the project, was laded from the field of social science and it was based on two methods: the questionnaire and the interview.

Participants recognised the situation of refugees in Europe, in partnership countries in the empirical way and they gained the information on this theme with the use of different methods; they created authentic materials to be used during lesson; they increased their faculties of speech within the range of English; they participated in the social life of their school and the city more active; they promoted their culture and identity in other European countries; they learnt to gain the objective information, to assume an attitude to it and if needed to help.

The long-term advantages which we were expecting at the end of the realization of the project were: greater consciousness and understanding the social, lingual and cultural diversity thanks to experiences in contacts with other cultures, in this with migrants; better lingual communicability of the participants of the project; the greater consciousness of the effectiveness of actions of local communities; extending of the didactic base of schools into materials needed to make lessons of history, the civics, the literature and English in more attractive and the effective way.

Schools taking part in the project became dynamic and professional environment of the European thoughts and values.
