Project Summary

The Building Competences through Heritage (BUCH) project is formed by the association of two secondary schools, referents in their respective regions in complementary fields (STEM for the Spanish School and Arts and History in the Finnish) who want to increase the European dimension, competences and basic skills of their students and create a plattform for the teachers to share their good practices in order to become STE(A)M centers promoting a higher quality in education. The project is based on a needs analysis carried out in both centers. In line with the objectives of Europe 2020, we want students to achieve good results in the core competencies that are key to future learning and employment opportunities and, therefore, necessary for social inclusion. However, approximately 20% of young people do not have the appropriate level of basic skills, in addition, in most European countries the desired performance in two foreign languages is not achieved at the end of school. The PISA 2015 reports (published in 2018) on linguistic competence show that although Spain has experienced a great improvement compared to the results of 2012, it is 30 points below the results of Finland. In the CODEMA the results in the subject of English Language and Literature in 1º Baccalaureate show an average of 33% of students suspended in the ordinary evaluation, however in KALLIO the students have a B2 + level of English. The Special Parlameter PE 90.1 reveals that although both countries consider membership to the EU positive, the Finns do not see that their country has benefited from their membership of the EU as much as the Spanish. That is why following the recommendation of the Special Report of the Eurobarometer 466 (Cultural Heritage, 201) where 88% of Europeans consider that cultural heritage should be taught in schools, we want to raise awareness of the importance of it among our educational communities, promoting the intercultural dialogue. In particular, we want our students to have the opportunity to know the various types of existing heritage:
– TANGIBLE HERITAGE – Buildings, monuments, books, archeology …
– INTANGIBLE HERITAGE – Traditions, festivals …
– NATURAL HERITAGE – Landscapes, gardens …
– DIGITAL HERITAGE – Digitized resources to guarantee its preservation

Through this partnership our educational communities will participate in online collaborative activities and effective mobility experiences that will increase the sense of European citizenship of our students, through the enhancement of European cultural heritage, as well as their social, civic and linguistic competences. The transnational execution of the project, carrying out various collaborative and cultural activities, will allow the partners to share knowledge and contacts, achieving results that individually would not be possible. The short duration mobilities will allow to share each school best practices, thus improving the teaching of teachers and producing a very significant impact not only in the participating students but in future generations of them, resulting in a sustainable impact in time. The project will mean that Kallio will also re-enroll in the Erasmus + program after several years without participating in it and his approach to the eTwinning plattform assisted by the CODEMA faculty.

The associated schools intend with this project to achieve the following objectives:

O1: Increase the European Dimension of the educational community of the partner schools by improving the perception of Europe by the students through the realization of the project activities that value the European heritage and the intense intercultural dialogue produced by the short-term exchanges. Create a network of centers with common interests that will allow the development of future KA229 projects. [Priority 1] [P1]
O2: Increase students competences in linguistic, social and civic communication, digital and cultural awareness and expressions by carrying out the activities of the eTwinning project BUCH and their participation in the activities of the mobilities [Priority 2] [P2]
O3: Reinforcement of the profile of the participating teachers, increasing their motivation and supporting their professional development through the exchange of good practices generating STEAM teachers [Priority 3] [P3]
O4: Achieve a European eTwinning quality seal by meeting the 6 criteria (pedagogical innovation, curricular integration, communication and information exchange, collaboration between centers, use of technology and results, impact and documentation) of the eTwinning Spanish National Support System rubrics for the National Quality Seal, thanks to which each partner school would be certified with the ETWINNING SCHOOL seal. in 2023.
